This discussion-based reading group offered through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Cal State Long Beach is built around books that help make sense of the moment we are living in.
Each term we choose contemporary nonfiction on issues shaping our society and our lives, from the institutions we rely on to the challenges we face together. We do not just discuss the ideas. We connect them to what is happening in the news, in our communities, and in our own lives.
The two books in each term are chosen together, not separately. Ideas raised in the first carry directly into the discussion of the second, so each pairing builds toward a fuller picture of its subject. Themes also return across terms, resurfacing months later from a new angle, so our conversations continue to build.
Our members are seniors with a love of learning who come ready to think, question, and listen. No lectures, no tests, just good books and better conversation.
We meet the last Friday of the month during OLLI terms. New members are welcome. Enroll through OLLI @CSULB.
